Kyle Simmers is a Canadian artist and illustrator born and raised in a special kind of nowhere known as Bashaw, Alberta. Now residing in the city of Calgary, Kyle works in diverse media to engage the public in conversations about queer identity, mental health and what happens to the stories you never tell.

Kyle foregroundes a gaze that unsettles power relations, creating room for queer transformations in spaces where queerness has been rendered invisible. Radiant light and acid tones etch new pathways into faded maps. Shifting from mainstream roadways to travel detours which reveal hidden geographies. Nostalgia becomes a tool for creating new ways of existing in old rigid contexts.

Narrative being the primary mechanism of both their graphic novel and murals, Kyle works to challenge existing narrative frameworks. Questioning gender norms and the language of queer storytelling to present characters who step past traditional archetypes.

People think that nothing happens in a small town, but that is like saying that nothing happens in a Sofia Coppola Film.
